Felix Kanungwe Kalaba is an Associate Professor of Environment and Development at the Copperbelt University in Zambia and Chief Technical Advisor for Envirosmart Solutions Zambia. His research focuses on human-environment interactions, focusing on links between livelihoods and environmental change, science, policy and environmental governance and policy and practical mechanisms that advance sustainable development. Felix’s research takes an interdisciplinary approach, grounded in systems thinking, using theories and both qualitative and quantitative methods from the natural and social sciences. He uses the systems focus helps to develop solutions to specific problems while recognising the complexity of the world's sustainable development challenges and the trade-offs and opportunities created by change.
Felix was a Lead Author for the intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report for Chapter 9 (African) and cross chapter paper on tropical forests. Felix holds a PhD in Environment from the University of Leeds, as well as an MSc in Forest Science and BSc in Forestry. Felix is an Alternate Bureau Member for the African region under the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). Felix is the Board Chairperson of African Research Impact Network (ARIN). Prof Kalaba has published widely and contributed to policy development at national level and international level. He has contributed significantly in designing climate risk assessments and adaptation to climate change. Felix was awarded the Environment and climate Change Award for leadership in Research in 2021.
